![]() That lead was cut to 5.9% or $39 million and will likely be cut further next weekend. Year-to-date, 2016 has pulled in $693 million, giving 2016 an early lead over 2015. This is not surprising, as this weekend last year, American Sniper set the record for biggest January weekend. The overall, the three-day weekend was up 4.2% from last weekend however, it was down 18% from last year. ![]() Star Wars: The Force Awakens was pushed into third place over the three-day weekend, but it rose to first place on the daily chart on Monday. Despite costing more to make, 13 Hours earned less than half Ride Along 2 opened with, while the less said about Norm of the North, the better. The other two wide releases were less successful. Weekend Wrap-Up: Ride Along Rides the Wave to the Top with $41.01 MillionĪs anticipated, Ride Along 2 earned first place over the long weekend earning more than it cost to make in just four days. The Martian: Extended Edition is also a must have, if you don't own it yet. It isn't the only contender for Pick of the Week this week, as Anomalisa, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Director's Cut, and others are also worth considering. The list of new home market releases isn't particularly long, but it includes Zootopia the best movie of the year, so it feels like an amazing week. Sci-fi actioner directed by Michael Bay opens June 23. Transformers: The Last Knight Big Game Spot I don’t think any film will come close to Finding Dory, but there’s a lot more depth this time around and I have high hopes 2017 will extend its lead. ![]() Finding Dory earned nearly $500 million domestically, while the second best film, Central Intelligence, barely earned a quarter of that. Last June was not particularly strong, outside of one hit. Meanwhile, Cars 3 and Transformers: The Last Knight are both aiming for $200 million. That said, Despicable Me 3 will probably end up being the biggest hit overall with over $300 million. Wonder Woman is widely expected to start the month with an explosive debut and pulling in more than $100 million during its opening weekend is more and more likely. In fact, there are four films with at least a decent shot at $200 million and we could double the number of $300 million hits released so far this year. There are five weeks and every week there is at least one film with a great shot at $100 million or more. The second biggest hit of the month will be Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and I would be surprised if it tops $150 million by any serious margin. 2, which is climbing towards $375 million domestically. May was a really soft month with only one unqualified hit, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. And B.) It is killing in-depth critical examination of movies. Besides that charge, the other two main complaints I’m hearing over and over again are A.) Rotten Tomatoes is a very shallow site, especially the Tomatometer. Some even point to Transformers: The Last Knight as proof that the site can ruin a film’s box office chances. I’ve seen a lot of people attacking Rotten Tomatoes recently saying it is bad for the movie business. As for the Pick of the Week, I’m going with Underground, Season Two, or the Two-Season box set. It earned well over $1 billion worldwide, but it is losing the charm the franchise thrived on during the past few installments. This week, the home market is led by The Fate of the Furious, which is the number one film both in terms of worldwide box office and alphabetically.
